How was TWICE formed?
In December 2013, JYP Entertainment, one of the leading entertainment companies in South Korea, announced the debut of a new girl group for 2014. In the first quarter of 2014, the company announced Lena and Cecilia as members. Other than these names, JYP had not released any names. After a short time, Cecilia left the agency. She was to be replaced by Sana. Then came another bad news: Lena also left the agency and therefore the debut of the group was canceled.
On February 11, 2015, Park Jin-young, the former head of JYP Entertainment finally announced that the members of a new girl group would be determined by the channel Mnet’s casting show Sixteen. The show began on May 5, 2015, with Sana, Jihyo, Nayeon, Jeongyeon, Mina, Chaeyoung, Tzuyu, Momo, and Dahyun being the successful winners and TWICE was formed.
Did Twice originally have seven members?
Yes, TWICE had originally seven members. By the show Sixteen on May 5, 2025, the first seven members were elected first. The original seven members of TWICE were Sana, Jihyo, Nayeon, Jeongyeon, Mina, Chaeyoung, and Dahyun. Park Jin-young, however, had a different idea. He later announced that he was increasing the number of members from seven to nine and included Tzuyu and Momo in the group. Tzuyu was very popular among the fans of the casting show and Momo had given a memorable performance. Therefore, Jin-young wanted to have them in the group as well.
