Formed by JYP Entertainment in 2015, TWICE is an adorable South Korean K-pop group comprising nine unique members. The group has achieved a lot of success not only in Korea but also worldwide and has earned the right to be one of the best K-pop groups in the world. Who are TWICE members? How was TWICE formed?

In December 2013, JYP Entertainment, one of the leading entertainment companies in South Korea, announced the debut of a new girl group for 2014. In the first quarter of 2014, the company announced Lena and Cecilia as members. Other than these names, JYP had not released any names. After a short time, Cecilia left the agency. She was to be replaced by Sana. Then came another bad news: Lena also left the agency and therefore the debut of the group was canceled.

On February 11, 2015, Park Jin-young, the former head of JYP Entertainment finally announced that the members of a new girl group would be determined by the channel Mnet’s casting show Sixteen. The show began on May 5, 2015, with Sana, Jihyo, Nayeon, Jeongyeon, Mina, Chaeyoung, Tzuyu, Momo, and Dahyun being the successful winners and TWICE was formed.

Did Twice originally have seven members?

Yes, TWICE had originally seven members. By the show Sixteen on May 5, 2025, the first seven members were elected first. The original seven members of TWICE were Sana, Jihyo, Nayeon, Jeongyeon, Mina, Chaeyoung, and Dahyun. Park Jin-young, however, had a different idea. He later announced that he was increasing the number of members from seven to nine and included Tzuyu and Momo in the group. Tzuyu was very popular among the fans of the casting show and Momo had given a memorable performance. Therefore, Jin-young wanted to have them in the group as well.

In 2015, TWICE made a debut with “The Story Begins.” The infectious charm of “Like OOH-AHH” marked their arrival on the K-Pop scene.

Moving ahead to 2016, “Page Two” elevated TWICE’s star status with the irresistible hit “Cheer Up.” This song swept the nation, earning them their first music show victories and the prestigious Song of the Year award at the 18th Mnet Asian Music Awards (2016).

2017 was marked by “Signal,” which, though not a chart-topper like its predecessors, demonstrated the group’s willingness to experiment with their sound. Then came “Twicetagram” in the same year, boasting the catchy “Likey.” Closing 2017 on a festive note was “Merry & Happy,” featuring the cheerful anthem “Heart Shaker.”

Summer 2018 was all about “Summer Nights” and its infectious hit “Dance the Night Away.” In late 2018, “Yes or Yes” continued the streak with its addictive title track and more accolades in its collection.

2019 brought “Fancy You,” gracing us with the sophisticated and catchy “Fancy.” In September 2019, “Feel Special” marked a poignant comeback, with the title track receiving critical acclaim and awards.

Despite the challenges of 2020, TWICE didn’t disappoint, delivering “More & More” in June, showcasing their unwavering determination. October 2020 saw the release of “Eyes Wide Open” with the empowering “I Can’t Stop Me,” an album that garnered critical acclaim.

Their latest offering, “Taste of Love,” released in June 2021, displayed TWICE’s versatility with the groovy “Alcohol-Free.”
